LEA Conference 2024: Incorporating Inclusive Design in Mainstream Learning Environments
For over 20 years, the Learning Environments Annual Regional Conferences have been at the forefront of innovation in education spaces. These conferences are unique events where educators connect with designers, planners, researchers, and other stakeholders to inspire, challenge, discuss, learn, and shape the future of learning environments.
The 22nd Annual Regional LEA Conference, titled AMPLIFY, took place in Melbourne from May 15 to 17, 2024. Hosted by the Victorian Chapter, this year’s conference promised an enriching experience under the themes of INCLUSION, LEARNING, and PLACE.
In a first-of-its-kind collaboration at the LEA conferences, Safetyline Jalousie partnered with Law Architects, Metrix Group, and Steelcase Learning to create a groundbreaking conceptual space. This project focused on inclusive design and demonstrated how product suppliers can effectively engage with the education sector.
The project extended beyond the creation of a physical stand. It tested the ideas of collaboration and connection among those who design and engage with learning spaces.
For Safetyline Jalousie, the louvres featured in the space were inspired by a real-life project recently completed with Cottee Parker Architects —Darling Point Special School. The design developed in close consultation with the school community, including the principal and deputy principal, used coloured louvres to refract light into the teaching space as a sensory mechanism.
