To meet fall prevention requirements above ground level, conventional awning and sliding windows must be restricted, throttling airflow on every level where residents need it most. The ventilation a window promises on paper is rarely the ventilation it delivers on the twentieth floor.

Efficient natural ventilation, without the restrictions
For most window types, ventilation and fall prevention pull in opposite directions. Because the openings between SJ Jalousie louvre blades are less than 125mm, the system satisfies fall prevention requirements by design — the louvres can open to their full capacity on any level of the building, with no restrictors, screens or additional hardware.
Fully open, the unique blade design delivers up to 85% free flow air through the opening — among the most efficient of any operable window type, and a world away from an awning window held on a restrictor. The result changes the facade arithmetic: effective ventilation from fewer openings per floor area, genuine cross-flow through living spaces, and a simpler, cleaner glazing package.

Smoke and fire ventilation, integrated into the architecture
Every apartment building needs a smoke ventilation strategy for its corridors and stairs — the critical escape paths in a fire event. What it doesn’t need is a compliance item that fights the architecture.
SJ Proteger is designed for exactly this role: an operable louvre system, tested to EN 12101-2 (Annex G) for natural smoke and heat ventilation, that interfaces with the fire indicator panel and BMS, complete with monitored 72-hour failsafe battery backup. On every other day of the year, the same louvres ventilate corridors naturally — a passive design benefit most mechanical smoke systems can never offer.
At the Adina Pentridge Hotel in Coburg, Cox Architecture integrated SJ Proteger louvres into the new tower of the transformed heritage precinct, providing natural smoke and heat ventilation across nine levels of hotel accommodation and six levels of apartments — life-safety performance that sits quietly within a design-led project.
More recently, 37 SJ Espacer frames running the full height of The Waterfront at Central Coast Quarter show the same thinking at 25 storeys: facade-integrated louvres ventilating corridors daily and connecting to the fire panel for emergency smoke ventilation.

Acoustic performance for inner-city living
Multi-residential sites and noise go hand in hand. Rail corridors, arterial roads and flight paths are precisely where density is being built — and where openable facades are usually treated as a liability.
They shouldn’t be. Sound, air and water all exploit the same weaknesses in a building envelope, so a louvre system engineered to seal tightly against weather also performs acoustically. Extended living spaces and wintergardens
Balconies in exposed or noise-affected towers often go unused — too windy, too loud, too hot or too cold. Enclosing them with louvres transforms them into wintergardens: semi-enclosed rooms that flex with the seasons, effectively adding a living space to every apartment without adding floor area.
At York and George in the Sydney CBD, John Wardle Architects specified 720 Safetyline Jalousie louvre windows across apartment balconies and podiums of the 40-storey tower. The louvres deliver cross-flow ventilation and 33Rw sound reduction against the city below, while complying with fall prevention requirements even when fully open — no additional balustrading hardware required.
